On Feather Boas

I have to be honest. When I first began making homecoming mums for the boys' girlfriends, I was not crazy about the feather boas that I saw in pictures. I conjured images of 1950's torch singers and drag queens. This is sounding bad for feather boas, isn't it?

2014 gf mum.
But I acquiesced and put them on mums because the girls wanted them. The boys even wanted them. I was frustrated that I couldn't make the boas go where I wanted them to. I did not like the feather falling off. Those first two, I'm afraid looked like flowers with feathers hanging off them.

Enter Mums, Inc. A group of professional mum makers that literally have been the most important part of 2015 for me.

I have learned that boas are not the feature of the mum. Boas make the mum full. Boas add texture. I learned how to add them so that they don't dominate the skirt.

And more importantly, I learned that I don't have to settle for scrawny, mangy craft store boas. And neither do you.

The biggest craft store boas are about 45 grams. The boas that I ordered this year are 65 and 100 grams! I am SO excited to work with these this year! I have heard so many great things from ladies that are, in my view, the leaders and innovators of the mum field.

I don't have any pictures of my own, yet. These are pictures from the supplier. How gorgeous are these boas? I ordered black, white, a few colors and with tinsel! I can't wait for them to arrive!
